You're not alone

Choose whatever helps right now.

If a life is in danger

Call the local emergency number, or ask someone nearby to call. If you have already hurt yourself or taken something dangerous, call now, even if you feel all right.

Where are you right now?

Help numbers depend on the country you're in, not on the site's language. We never ask for access to your location.

What you can do right now

  • If anything nearby could be used to hurt yourself, put it out of reach or ask someone to stay with you.
  • Message someone you trust: “I’m having a hard time. Can you be with me?”
  • You don't have to solve everything now. Getting through the next few minutes is enough.

Talk to a person

If you're having thoughts of hurting yourself or of not wanting to live, call a support line. They will listen without judgment. You can also call when things simply feel too heavy.

Choose your country above to see its support lines. Lines in many countries are also listed in the Find A Helpline directory.

Nine of Swords

A figure sits up in bed, face in hands, while nine swords hang in the dark, none touching: night worry at its loudest.

By Tarot tradition: a mirror, not a verdict

Stop here if you need to. Set your feet on the floor, switch on a light if you can, and breathe out slowly once.

The image is hidden. The card's name and text stay on the page.

The 1909 deck after drawings by Pamela Colman Smith (public domain).

Image and meaning

Sitting up in the dark with every thought sharp and fast is a hard hour, and far more people go through it than it seems at the time. Yet in the picture, none of the swords touches the figure. At night, worries grow louder, and loud is not the same as true. Nothing has to be solved in that hour; it is enough to be kind to yourself until it passes.

The suit of Swords: thoughts and words.

Light and shadow

Support. The quilt of roses is within reach: warmth and comfort may be closer than the dark lets you see.

Worth noticing. Going over the same words and choices again and again, as though replaying them could change how things went.

A gentle step

Try writing the worries down in a notebook, picking a time to look at them in daylight, and then closing it for the night.

Gently. If your thoughts ever turn to not wanting to live, please use the SOS button or contact a crisis line right away.

Across areas of life

Relationships
A worry about someone close that grows louder at night and quieter by day.
Work
Replaying a meeting or a mistake in the small hours, long after the workday has ended.
Resources
Worry is tiring in itself; the weariness it leaves is real and worth respecting.
About you
Being as kind to yourself at night as you would be to a friend who cannot sleep.

Questions for yourself

Which worry feels loudest in the dark, and how does it sound by day?

Who could you tell, even briefly, that some nights have been hard?
