You're not alone

Choose whatever helps right now.

If a life is in danger

Call the local emergency number, or ask someone nearby to call. If you have already hurt yourself or taken something dangerous, call now, even if you feel all right.

Where are you right now?

Help numbers depend on the country you're in, not on the site's language. We never ask for access to your location.

What you can do right now

  • If anything nearby could be used to hurt yourself, put it out of reach or ask someone to stay with you.
  • Message someone you trust: “I’m having a hard time. Can you be with me?”
  • You don't have to solve everything now. Getting through the next few minutes is enough.

Talk to a person

If you're having thoughts of hurting yourself or of not wanting to live, call a support line. They will listen without judgment. You can also call when things simply feel too heavy.

Choose your country above to see its support lines. Lines in many countries are also listed in the Find A Helpline directory.

Four of Swords

A knight lies at rest, hands joined, three swords hung on the wall above: a deliberate pause to recover.

By Tarot tradition: a mirror, not a verdict

The card Four of Swords: a drawing from the 1909 deck in a velvet frame
The 1909 deck after drawings by Pamela Colman Smith (public domain).

Image and meaning

Three swords hang on the wall, put aside for now, and a fourth lies flat along the stone base where the figure rests at full length, eyes closed. This is rest chosen on purpose, a quiet retreat while strength returns, with the guard lowered but not gone. For a busy or anxious mind, the hardest part is often allowing rest without earning it first. Stepping back is part of the work.

The suit of Swords: thoughts and words.

Light and shadow

Support. Rest as a skill: stopping on purpose, so strength has room to return.

Worth noticing. The guilt that shows up the moment you stop, insisting there is more to do.

A gentle step

Sit back or lie down for five minutes. Tense your shoulders, then let them go heavy; repeat with your hands.

Gently. Chosen rest differs from shutting everything out for weeks; if stillness starts to feel empty, it is worth telling someone you trust.

Across areas of life

Relationships
Space in a relationship that restores you both rather than pushing you apart.
Work
A planned pause before the next push, or a task set aside on purpose.
Resources
Sleep, quiet and time alone counted as real resources, not luxuries.
About you
Letting yourself stop without explaining or apologizing.

Questions for yourself

How might your days change if rest did not have to be earned first?

Which conflict or task could you hang on the wall for a while?
